A 69 year old female, and avid walker of 2-4 miles daily had pain upon walking, and it was growing worse. A hammertoe on her left foot was being rubbed, and made sore by the left large toe. The left big toe had one of the most common foot disorders, Hallux valgus. "A hallux valgus deformity, commonly called a bunion, is when there is medial deviation of the first metatarsal and lateral deviation of the great toe (hallux). The condition can lead to painful motion of the joint and shoe wear difficulty."
The more extreme pain for this patient was the pain of the sore on her hammertoe, directly caused by the left deformed big toe rubbing against it. Under a diagnosis of Left Hallux Valgus, she was recommended for surgery. Her procedure was listed as: Left Austin/Akin, Left #2 Hammertoe correction.
Out-patient surgery was performed on October 17, 2018. Below is a slideshow of photos of pre-operative and post operative conditions. After surgery her foot was sutured, gauzed, and a small boot was used. After approximately 6.5 hours after surgery she was instructed to cut along a pre-made line on the gauze to relieve pressure. She was to keep the boot on, and use crutches with no weight bearing on the foot for 5 days, and not to get it wet. She had a follow-up appointment with her surgeon five days after surgery. The surgeon said the foot looked very good, on October 22, 2018. The patient reported very little pain or discomfort. On a pain scale of 1-10, she chose #2. I will post follow up photos in upcoming weeks to show improvements at suture lines. The patient is required to go to follow-up appointments every two weeks, 4 more times. Stitches were removed after two weeks. (see photos) Boot still needs to be worn after 4th week. But now she can wash the foot, and get it wet in the shower.
