Now, imagine someone playing that TV game with you where they lay out 10 cards you must flip over to win or lose a given prize. In December 2007, there was Carol standing before 10 giant cards in the game of survival.
Seven of the cards, when she flipped them over, would read: 'YOU SURVIVE!' But there were 3 cards that read: 'YOU DO NOT SURVIVE!' Her cancer had a 70% survival rate. Those odds seem good, right? But not so when your playing a game for your life instead of for a prize on a game show.
The stress Carol had in living through the cards she was dealt took years to clear her mind, and to this day, still 'lurks' within her. Think about that stress you feel as you simply watch a TV contestant flipping over cards in a game show for a prize. How do you feel when you are watching? Anxious, I bet. Afterall, it is a game of chance, a game of odds. And how many win by picking 7 out of 10 cards correctly in a row? Carol beat the odds.
I have never met Carol or her husband Pete face to face, but I met her online via her sister whom I had met the year Carol was diagnosed with cancer. This interview was done by email in 2014. You will find Carol to be honest and direct. I like her 'real' truth in the answers. She does not flourish flowers upon her experience, which I think many survivors will appreciate.
Here is a photograph of Carol and her wonderful husband Pete from a decade or so ago. A more recent photograph of Carol will be at the end of her interview. All photographs are the property of Carol and Pete Jamison.
